E-bikes

An electric bike or eBike is a bicycle that features an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery to assist your pedalling.
Most eBikes also feature a handlebar mounted control system for setting your level of pedal assistance and displaying basic ride information like speed and distance travelled.
eBikes make it easier to ride further and more often. You can go longer distances, get there faster, easily carry more luggage and arrive in a fresher condition when doing it! You still get an exercise benefit and the simple joy of being on a bike, but the experience is less taxing and something you’ll want to repeat daily.
When you consider no parking fees, minimal fuel costs and avoiding crowded public transport - it is easy to see why these bikes are becoming so popular.

Motors, there are 2 types

Mid Drive

  • Efficiency: Mid-drive motors are typically located at the bike's center, resulting in a more balanced weight distribution. This positioning enhances overall handling and efficiency, as the weight of the motor is evenly distributed between the front and rear wheels.

  • Natural Riding: Unlike hub motors, which provide power directly to the wheel, mid-drive motors leverage the bike's existing gears. This allows for a more natural and responsive riding experience, with smoother acceleration and optimized energy usage. Riders can shift gears to match their pedaling cadence, resulting in a seamless integration of electric and human power.

  • Hill Climbing: Mid-drive motors excel at hill climbing due to their ability to utilize the bike's gears. By leveraging the gearing system, mid-drive eBikes can generate more torque, making uphill rides easier and more manageable. This is particularly beneficial for riders facing steep inclines or challenging terrain.

  • Longer Range: The energy-efficient design of mid-drive eBikes contributes to extended battery life and longer range compared to other motor types. By optimizing power usage and leveraging the bike's gears, mid-drive motors can achieve greater efficiency, allowing riders to travel longer distances on a single charge.

  • Better Handling: With the motor positioned near the bike's center of gravity, mid-drive eBikes offer improved handling and stability. This balanced weight distribution enhances control, especially at higher speeds and during cornering. Riders can enjoy a more confident and responsive riding experience, whether navigating city streets or tackling off-road trails.

  • Lower Maintenance: Mid-drive motors interact directly with the bike's drivetrain, resulting in less wear and tear compared to hub motors. This translates to reduced maintenance requirements over time, as there are fewer components subject to mechanical stress. Riders can expect a more reliable and durable motor system, requiring less frequent servicing and repairs.

  • Versatility: Mid-drive eBikes are highly versatile and can be adapted for various riding styles and terrain types. Whether commuting to work, exploring urban landscapes, or embarking on off-road adventures, mid-drive motors offer the flexibility to tackle diverse riding conditions. Riders can enjoy the benefits of electric assistance across a wide range of cycling activities, making mid-drivee-bikes a popular choice for riders seeking versatility and performance.

Hub Drive

  • Efficiency: Hub motors are integrated directly into the wheel hub, providing a simple and straightforward power delivery system. While they may not offer the same balanced weight distribution as mid-drive motors, hub motors are efficient and effective at providing electric assistance.

  • Direct Power: Hub motors provide direct power to the wheel, bypassing the bike's gearing system. This can result in a more straightforward riding experience, as there is no need to shift gears to match pedal cadence with motor assistance.

  • Simplicity: Hub-drive eBikes are known for their simplicity and ease of use. With fewer moving parts and components, they tend to require less maintenance compared to mid-drive eBikes. This can be appealing for riders who prefer a low-maintenance electric bike option.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Hub-drive eBikes are often more affordable than mid-drive models, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious riders. The simplicity of the design and manufacturing process can contribute to lower overall costs, making hub-drive eBikes accessible to a wider range of riders.

  • Quiet Operation: Hub motors are known for their quiet operation, producing minimal noise while in use. This can be advantageous for riders who prefer a quieter riding experience, whether commuting in urban areas or enjoying leisurely rides in nature.

  • Versatility: Hub-drive eBikes are versatile and can be adapted for various riding styles and terrain types. While they may not offer the same level of performance and efficiency as mid-drive models, hub-drive eBikes are capable of providing electric assistance across a wide range of cycling activities.
